How To Get Dsicounts
Before I went to Albania this summer…
I needed some new clothes.
My style is wack. (Or it was)
So I did what every logical person would do.
Went and bought clothes.
Now, I’ve always been a fan of having it simple.
No big logos.
No big price tags.
Nothing that shows off.
Quality-wise; it needed to be the best.
Anyways… as I was trying them on the women who worked there approached me.
Saying it looked good on me.
She was not older than 25 (I think), so I nodded and said thank you.
After about 15 minutes of trying on different clothes, I finally decided what I wanted.
Took it with me and went over to her to buy it.
Since I had been reading “The Art of Persuasion” I decided to try and implement some of the things I had learned.
“Talk about them. Make them feel special.”
And so I did.
“I love the pink shirt btw, It looks good on you.”
She was flattered. Almost blushing.
I don’t think she’s ever received a compliment from a customer. People in Norway are cold asf.
As I handed the clothes over to her I saw her name tag, I’ll not use her real name so let’s call her Maria.
“So, how long have you been working here Maria?”, Shocked I knew her name, she started answering and talking about this and that.
And I paid FULL attention to everything she said so I had multiple strings to pull from.
The conversation went back and forth.
And before I paid I said “Thank you. You’ve been extremely helpful.” since she packed my clothes and put them nicely into the bag for me.
Before I managed to tap my credit card to pay the $200 she stopped me and said “Well actually. We do have a discount going on for those types of material” while she pointed at the linen shirts and trousers “And since you have a mix it makes it a lot easier if I register them all as linen shirts.”
Before I managed to answer, she removed $120 of the original cost.
Making it only $80.
“Thank you, Maria”
If you don’t realize what I did here. I’ll tell you.
Humans are really simple.
The 1 thing they seek from people is:
Validation
I started off the whole conversation by validating her thoughts. Her kindness and customer service.
For once, she felt like someone ACTUALLY cared about her approaching them and offering herself to help.
People who work in clothing stores, or in any 9-5, rarely get that sort of validation.
Therefore, she felt validated. Even smiled… and blushed.
I used her name and listened to what she was saying. Pulling string from what she had already told me. I made it all about her.
And never once did I talk about myself.
By doing so, I saved myself $120.
It’s fairly simple.
Understanding human behavior will make a complete change in your day-to-day life.
